Waterfall (United States) by Stephen Hilyard

Waterfall presents the viewer with a single static shot of a majestic waterfall. Over the course of the piece a number of diminutive figures walk slowly into the shot on the gravel bar at the bottom of the falls. They have come to pay their respects to the waterfall, we might call them pilgrims - we might call them tourists. Their slow-motion performances appear to be a mixture of the comedic and the devout.

Sunflower (United States) by Stephen Hilyard

Sunflower is a single channel video piece, part of a trilogy entitled The Ends of the Earth. The theme of the trilogy is love, each piece deals with this theme in a different context, in the case of Sunflower the subtext of the piece is platonic love between friends. This piece is the result of a collaboration with a friend of mine, the writer Jon Wei. He created a dialog for three voices in reaction to an early version of the video. The video is derived from footage of floating ice on Lake Superior that was shot during the spring thaw. The dialog deals with questions of mutability and change, much as the lake itself wavers between solid and liquid for a very brief time as the pack ice is breaking up. Two voices are discussing the inherent nature of three different people, themselves and a third person, as well as the relationships between these three. The voices are characterized as “Stone”, “Water” and “One Who Thinks of Others”. The voices appear to personify their essential nature as revealed in the discussion (consistency versus mutability for instance), however they are in fact all voiced by a single actor performing both voices in real time. Sunflower is presented in three separate scenes. In each scene the conversation follows a similar course but the roles are exchanged by subtle changes to the dialog. In each scene a different character becomes the unseen third person who is being discussed by the other two. In fact it is not even clear that these really are three separate people, rather than three different aspects of the same mind conducting in internal conversation with itself. Each scene is named after the absent aspect.

The dialog for Sunflower was performed by the actor Jonathan Smoots and recorded at the Media Center in the Communication Arts Department of the University of Wisconsin Madison.

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SOUNDS OF THE MANUAL LABOR OF HOGS, HORSES, HUMANS & DOGS FROM MORE WESTERNS THAN I CARED TO SEE (2025) is an experimental film about the labor that brought the American West into capitalism and the breath it took to get us there. It undertakes a systematic but ultimately failed attempt to register the bodily effort of animals (human and nonhuman) through the sounds of work described in the closed captions of Western films and TV shows. The transformation of bodily exertion into sound and then into words on a television screen later transcribed by me on my computer and overlaid on top of the video image brings to mind the phase changes necessary for respiration to be incorporated into the capitalist economy. For this found footage film, I appropriated clips from mid-20th century advertising and industrial films as well as videos made by steam train enthusiasts, creating novel sound/image pairings.

Dowsing (United States, United States) by Tim Feeney

Ten repetitive sonic interventions within the eroded landscapes of the Burren, County Clare, Ireland.

These occur at sites of local “anti-monuments:” a kilometers-long, natural limestone pavement high above Galway Bay; stone farm walls and remnants of circular structures on hillsides; cairns near a shoreline; a field of glacial boulders interrupted by a road smashed from the surrounding stone formations, in forced public work by the starving during the Great Hunger of 1845 to 1852. These structures speak to both the passage of geologic time, and the care and efforts of human survival beginning in the Neolithic period and tended through the present, though local history at each site may be lost, or unrecorded.

These are introduced in title cards in English, italicized as a term in a language foreign to the observer, and in Irish in plain font, as in an observer’s native language. 

From one perspective, a sonic divining or physical research into the properties of land, space, light, and time in these locations; from another, an attempt as an “Irish-American” to reckon with language, archaeology, and history felt as formative but inarticulable without lived context.

After a point, you can only ask the stone so many questions, and sometimes you can only hear your own voice in response.

Home is a short film about the fragility of life and the virtue of solitude. A faceless figure attempting not to resist the endless waves of pointlessness.

Home explores the tension between presence and absence within the strange choreography of existing. The protagonist’s nudity, devoid of eroticism, emphasizes vulnerability and the human form as a part not nature, reinforcing the film’s existential themes.  The figure remains faceless, allowing her to become anyone — or everyone, shifting the focus away from personal identity and stressing instinct over intellect, being over persona.

Home oscillates between the micro and the macro, between intimacy and vastness. Ants crawling with tireless precision, the sun rendered in cosmic proximity. In this interplay the human body becomes just another element: fragile, raw, exposed and dwarfed by the enormity of the natural world. 

Home meditates on aloneness not as absence, but as condition. It invites the viewer to witness a body moving through a universe that does not look back. Accompanied by music that is as raw as it is emotional, the film does not conform to conventional cinematic structures but instead allows the audience to immerse themselves in the rhythm of isolation and the ebb and flow of meaning in an indifferent world.

The boundary between reality and hallucination begins to blur, and the man is forced to confront the deepest and most uncomfortable truths of his existence. The meal culminates in a devastating revelation, leading him to a conclusion as surreal as it is inevitable.

“Dream’s Descent” is a hauntingly surreal dance film that traces the journey of a solitary dancer as he navigates a dreamlike landscape fractured by memory, identity and desire. Drawn into a shifting world where time dissolves and space contracts, he encounters fragmented versions of himself, each embodying a suppressed emotion, forgotten trauma or repressed aspiration.  Through ritualistic choreography and symbolic confrontations, these encounters blur the line between self and shadow. As the dancer spirals deeper into the labyrinth of his subconscious, the movement becomes a language of reckoning.

“Dream’s Descent” is not about conquering the self, but integrating it, emerging not whole, but awakened, transformed by the very fragmentation that once threatened to undo him and ready to face whatever comes next.

Hairy Dreams (Canada) by Lina Cruz

Hairy Dreams evokes the interior world of a lonesome yet carefree character. Through words and movement, this is a visual abstract tale, taking place in a white cave-like space made of paper. Within this sort of origami igloo, a surrealist puzzle of images portrays the everyday routine of a diligent being.

Through various incongruent actions, the character assembles and disassembles repeatedly its interior translucent world. In this quest for an interior castle, time is always present, haunting yet of precious companionship.

The daily routine eventually leads to the ultimate goal: the need to be fed in order to keep the dream flowing. Towards the end of the cycle, in a sort of "oneiric" and liberating flight, the character swiftly disappears into the paper walls of its imaginary castle.

Contrary to Cruz’s works for the stage, Hairy Dreams is only lightly dance oriented. There is movement and body expression in it, but the film relies mostly on a composition of objects, actions, words and soundtrack.

Dirt (United States) by David Finkelstein

Dirt is an extended poetic meditation on the American relation to the soil, and the energies buried within it. Notions of “dirtiness” and “cleanliness” are re-examined. Centuries of history, of conquering and re-conquering, lie beneath our feet, and the return of the vanquished is inevitable. There has also always been an alternative possibility, within the American landscape, inspired by indigenous culture, of a more peaceful relationship with the soil, the resting place of our ancestors.

A collage of poetic imagery, music, and invocatory language, the film follows two men in a series of esoteric experiments. Their words take us to unexpected landscapes, populated by revengeful toasters, flying fiddles, an unusual game of tennis, and a mountaintop crowned with an electric guitar. A postmodern video opera, Dirt bathes the viewer in music, language, and visual spectacle.

In an attempt to go mainstream, the KKK has modernized and gone high tech with flashy new promo videos, clothing, and an evil plot to plunge the country into a race war with the help of a shrink ray created by their top scientists. After a a policeman shoots an innocent black man, he enlists the Klan to help him elude justice by retrieving the incriminating bullet. FBI agent Kwame Blackstone gets wind of the plan and enlists the army to help him put a stop to the evil organization for good. But with sophisticated new weaponry and the wind in their sheets, they will not go down without a fight. An over the top comedic political satire featuring a cast of thousands and the best government-produced film footage money can't buy!

Originally created for a Houston city public art project, Steinke and Cook merge the micro with the cosmic in their new film U-SCOPIC. Drawing inspiration from microscopic creatures and audio and imagery from the NASA archives, the artists animate new forms using various experimental techniques. In this piece, circular orbs morph in and out of focus, resembling specimens in a petri dish, a starry galaxy, or bubbly particles floating in space. From the tiniest creatures that help keep our ecosystem healthy to the farthest star that illuminates our sky, the project reflects on the beauty and interconnectedness within our universe.

Komboloi (worry beads) is a collaborative video poem that merges experimental film and animation techniques to explore anxiety in the era of climate change. 

Central to the film is the symbolic use of worry beads—a cross-cultural object used to calm anxiety. Crafted from ice formed from local water sites, these beads embody the fragility of our planet and serve as a visual and thematic focal point. The project weaves together 16mm analogue footage, stop motion, cyanotype on film, and other processes to embrace chance and echo the unpredictable consequences of climate change. 

Guided by a Fluxus-inspired procedural poem and an original musical score, Komboloi invites reflection on ecological grief, impermanence, and the urgent need for both individual and collective action.

Under the occupied shadows, floating cosmo ground, xenoliths, and the breaths perceived from all beings are increasingly coarsened by humanity’s collective experiments. This work considers all existing entities as pioneers of a sentient cosmos, thinking not only from Earth but from the universe at large, and positions both human and non-human elements as agents jointly adventuring through this unknown space, while exploring the ecological emergencies of the present.

Starting from the current moment, when space development has once again surfaced as the foremost political theme worldwide, the work engages with the pioneering momentum of the new space age. From initiatives like SpaceX’s multi-planetary civilization program, which extends fascistic projects on Earth into the cosmos, Natal Kick Cosmo Ground seeks to chart new relationships. Natal Kick articulates asymmetric finitude as the release of uneven energy during a supernova explosion, marking the death of a star once considered infinite. In contrast, humanity projects its Earth-bound modes of dominance and thought beyond the planet, spreading terrestrial conflicts and unjust hierarchies into the stars and cosmos under the infinite nominality of the commons, while actively reinforcing extractivist practices.

Contemporary society extends into a new space age through scientific production and experimentation that reach beyond the bounds of Earth. Private corporations and state governments attempting to exploit space treat its territory as an inexhaustible resource, deploying the finitude of the cosmos as a propaganda device for political ideologies that transcend national and anthropological borders. In this world, finite from the start, all agents of action may, as Latour suggests, be political agents, encompassing humans and non-humans alike. Here, cosmopolitics gestures toward a cooperative approach for addressing global crises. The work aspires to recreate our relationship with the cosmos and dreams of new political imaginaries. In doing so, it acknowledges all actors, including humans, non-humans, objects, and environments, as political agents and situates them within a shared discourse on planetary conditions.

Made for the camera and thew choreographer Christina Tingskog has choreographed, filmed and edited in order to really choreograph with the images in relationship to the music. The choreographer chose slow motion in order to focus on details of the movements and the meetings, in an attempt to capture and convey the sensation of watching dance live. The forces in, and the beauty of the bodies, are exaggerated and in focus.

TACHELES, A Berlin Story (United States) by Andy Cohen

TACHELES is the story of a building which miraculously withstood Berlin’s most turbulent century. After its construction in 1906 as a state-of-the-art shopping center in Mitte’s Jewish Quarter, it was seized by the Nazis, then the Soviets, and finally the East Germans who dynamited it. After the wall fell, artists and anarchists from both sides squatted the bombed-out ruin, creating an avant-garde arthouse.

Tacheles becomes synonymous with experimental art and alternative lifestyles in this newly reclaimed social freedom. The film zooms in on the golden era of the building’s life in the 2000s: A thriving art sanctuary with free ateliers where international artists of all backgrounds and mediums flock to live, work and breathe art, fiercely independent of the established art system.

Our guide through the graffitied ruin and the surrounding bullet-ridden streets of Berlin-Mitte is Tim Roeloffs, a humorous, charismatic photomontage artist, whose work preserves the scars of WW2 as well as DDR Cold War culture for future generations to learn from. He leads the Tacheles artists, whose work reflects a neighborhood struggling with reunification and gentrification, as they fight various investors who try to evict them in order to develop the hottest property in the center of Berlin.
